For the majority of mobile phone owners, the idea of not having insurance for phones is truly a nightmare. With modern smartphones becoming more and more expensive, the need to protect it against the worst possible outcome – be that theft, loss, or accidental damage – is more prevalent than ever.

Luckily, it's never been easier to get phone insurance, with some form or another being available from independent insurers, supermarkets, and even your bank. But how do they compare to each other, and how can you be certain you're getting the best protection for the price you want? Let's look at what Santander mobile phone insurance has to offer and how it stacks up to our policies.

Home and Contents Insurance

Unlike other competitor banks, Santander does not offer mobile phone insurance with one of its paid current accounts. The only way to get mobile phone insurance from Santander is to benefit from a comprehensive home and contents insurance policy. This will provide cover for all of the items inside your property, ensuring that, should the worst happen, you'll be able to recoup the costs.

Santander home insurance is available in two tiers, Classic and Plus, both of which offer a different level of cover. Plus insures up to the value of £50,000, has accidental cover as an optional extra, and has a variable excess between £100-£500. On the other hand, the Classic tier offers an unlimited contents sum, and the excess of £100-£500, same as the Plus policy. Both of these policies would allow you to claim on damage to, or theft of, your smartphone should the worst happen.

The most obvious downside of getting mobile phone insurance from Santander is that it is only valid when the smartphone is in your home. As soon as you step outside with it, you'll no longer be protected. Furthermore, home insurance policies tend to be more expensive than simply insuring one device, and if you make a claim, your premiums will go up on everything, not just for the item you claimed on.
